ORS (OASIS Retention Services Program)

After first generation and/or underrepresented students have been admitted to the University of Florida, the OASIS Retention Services (ORS), which is affiliated with the Office for Academic Support & Institutional Services (OASIS) provides a number of retention and support services. These services include academic support, one-on-one tutoring, course selection assistance, and peer-counseling. Other important student support services offered through OASIS include transition and orientation programs for newly admitted first generation and underrepresented students. The PAACT Program (Pledging to Achieve Academic Competence Together), and CAAP (Cooperative Academic Achievement Program) are designed to assist new students to become familiar with the vast resources available at UF.

ORS is responsible for making academic support services available for the more than 3,000 first generation and underrepresented students as well as underrepresented faculty in CLAS. Though many are unaware, the first generation and underrepresented students served in this division run the gamut from marginal to exceptional and from freshman to senior. Increasingly, and with favorable results, ORS is able to focus attention on all admitted students, both scholarship and non-scholarship. Primary among the services offered are those that enrich the students' educational experiences at the university such as forums and panel discussions on topics pertinent to first generation and underrepresented generation affairs, departmental societies, clubs and organizations, and those other activities and services which facilitate the students' successful matriculation at the university.

Free Tutoring Services

OASIS provides free tutoring services. OASIS tutors traditionally are juniors and seniors who have an average GPA of 3.5. Tutoring is provided in Accounting, Algebra, Biology, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1-3, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Economics, English, Spanish, Physics, Stastistics, Trigonometry. All the tutoring sessions are conducted on a one-on-one basis which provide an enhanced and more effective learning environment than the group tutoring offered by other UF tutoring services.

We have evaluation forms for the tutors and session registration forms for the students. Evaluation forms give us feed back about tutors so we know how our serivices could be improved upon. Session registration forms help us track the performance of the students. The number of students using OASIS tutoring services has increased by about 70% since Spring 1998.

The Academic Life Line

In addition to General Counseling, OASIS provides an Academic Life Line (ALL) which especially addresses directly the academic needs of first generation and underrepresented students with GPAs of 2.0 or below. Students and staff consider this program to be quite effective. The objective of this is to provide intensive counseling, advisement, special workshops and special programs, through coordinated presentations by Counseling Center, Academic Advisement Center, the Career Resource Center and others.

Free Counseling Service

Personal Counseling Services is made available by an Intern/Practicum Graduate student from the Counselor Education Department of the College of Education on the Family and Mental Health Counseling Track. This counselor provides invaluable personal counseling to students who might be having academic problems. Infact, we consider academic problems to be the signal of personal problems. As the personal problems are resolved, the academic problems can be recognized and effectively resolved.

Students who would very likely never go to the Counseling Center are ushered in to see the Personal Counselor by any and all of the other programs of OASIS.

Personal Counseling has experienced a 40% increase in counseling sessions each term since its inception in Spring, 1999.

Destination Gainesville

Destination Gainesville, in conjunction with the Office of Admissions, is a program designed to reach out to prospective first generation and underrepresented generation students in the major metropolitan areas of the state who have been admitted to the University of Florida but have not yet been enrolled. The Director of OASIS works closely with the Admissions Office in writing proposals for the program, planning the trips to and activites in the metropolitan areas and arranging for further recruitment / retention efforts such as Preview and other academic support services at the University of Florida. Typically, recently, nearly 1000 prospective students and their parents are seen at up to ten metropolitan sites of Gainesville, Ft.Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, St.Petersburg, Tallahassee, Jacksonville and Atlanta.
