Welcome to the homepage for Dr. Betty J. Stewart-Fullwood, Director/Senior Lecturer at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. I am the Interim Director of the OASIS Program. Even though I attended Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida, I earned a B. A. in Psychology, M.A. in Social Psychology and Ph.D. in Counselor Education, all from UF. My resume gives you all of the particulars.
My first job at UF was Counselor Coordinator for the Special Services. That was August, 1974.
I am also a proud inaugural faculty member for First-Year Florida.
Win, Lose, or draw, I am a diehard Gator Fan.
And now, about the OASIS Program.
OASIS Overview
The OASIS office provides support and enrichment services to all under-represented first generation University of Florida students. In addition, OASIS provides the primary academic support services to approximately 150-300 specially admitted freshmen each year who are carefully selected by the Office of Admissions for participation in the AIM Program. These high-potential AIM students are admitted during the Summer term. Through close cooperation with the Offices of Admissions, Dean of Students, Instructional Resources, Financial Aid, Housing, and the Academic Advisement Center, these students enjoy the benefits of thorough orientation and placement sessions, enroll in appropriate regular and developmental courses, and establish and maintain regular and frequent contact with the OASIS staff.
A cadre of trained peer counselors comprise the frontline contacts for these students. These Peer/Tutor Counselors assist students in making a smooth transition to the university environment. This relationship begins during the summer term and continues throughout the academic year. Peer/Tutor Counselors help students to develop coping and social adjustment skills by providing a positive association with successful peers and role models.
The OASIS staff establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with the parents of enrolled students and actively encourages their involvement with their student's college career.
All University of Florida under-represented first genereation students, as well as participants in the AIM Program are eligible to participate in academic workshops and learning experiences which cover such topics as study skills, time management, career planning, library skills, stress management, motivation and test anxiety.
Other supportive services offered or arranged include retention workshops, student assemblies/information sessions, academic progress monitoring, tutoring, advocacy and facilitation of successful negotiation of any and all processes of the University of Florida, mid-term evaluation and other evaluation activities, and educational and social activities.
The success of the program is reflected in the students' high rate of retention and academic achievement.
Mrs. Bernice L. Pruitt-Wilson, Program Assistant provides on-going support for program participants.
The OASIS Program Offices are located on the 3rd floor of Little Hall. My office is located in room 314 Little Hall. Our mailing address is P. O. Box 118115.
