Prospective Upward Bound Students and Parents

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program at the University of Florida that helps high school students to develop the skills and motivation needed to succeed in the college and post graduate careers. Currently students from 10 high schools in Alachua and Bradford counties are enrolled in Upward Bound at UF.

Upward Bound is one of the original TRIO programs funded by U.S Department of Education. Upward Bound programs sever all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Palau, Micronesia, and American Samoa.

Eligibility

Upward Bound serves students enrolled in the 9th-12th grades. Students may be admitted to the Upward Bound after completing the 8th grade. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Additionally the students must be either a potential first generation college student or a member of a low-income household. A student is “first generation” if neither parent has a B.A. or B.S. degree. Low income guidelines are established by the U.S. department of education.

Note: In order to enroll into Upward Bound Program, student must have completed 8th grade but should not have completed 10th grade. 


              Applying to the Upward Bound Program at UF:


Upward Bound accepts only paper application at this time. The following documents are required for completing the application.

1) A copy of Parent’s last income tax statement (IRS form 1040 OR 1040A).
Other sources of income, if any, such as:
Social Security
Welfare Benefits
2) Student’s high school transcript
3) Written statement that neither custodial parent/guardian has a bachelor’s degree (B.A, B.S).


Parents are required to sign:
1) Activity and field trip authorization clause in the form.
2) High school information authorization release clause in the form.

Also required on the application:

1) A short essay paragraph by the student stating his/her reason for wanting to participate in the Upward Bound Program
2) High school teacher’s recommendation
3) High school counselor’s recommendation
