Guidelines & Procedures for Students

Attendance and Participation

Students are required to attend the Opening Assembly and all three class periods. If a student will be absent for any reason, s/he should notify the Associate Director in advance, if possible. Following an absence, students must present a note signed by their parent or guardian to the Associate Director. The note should include the student’s name as well as the date and specific reason for the absence. If a note is not received, the absence will be considered an unexcused absence. Students who accumulate three or more unexcused absences during one semester will be suspended from the program.

Students are responsible for arranging with their teachers, counselors and tutors to make up any assignments or other academic activities missed while absent.

Please come to all classes on time and prepared to work. This includes having necessary supplies: paper, pencil or pen. This also means bringing assignments or homework for Study Hall

Conduct

1Students are expected to show respect for all staff members, fellow students, and themselves. In addition to attendance, conduct will affect the amount of the stipend received at the end of each semester. Stipends will be reduced for repeated misconduct.  Students who accumulate two or more “Poor” conduct reports in class or misbehave during any UB activity may have privileges taken away or may be suspended or terminated, depending upon the type of misconduct.

2Teachers and Tutors record academic activity and student conduct on Attendance Sheets and submit them to the Upward Bound Office after Period 3 each Saturday.  These Attendance Sheets are then given to the Counselors.  Counselors review the teachers’ and tutors’ comments and evaluate each student’s conduct and performance in class.  Students will be required to correct any inappropriate behaviors.  Teachers and Tutors will also record students’ excellent behavior and performance!

Dress

3Standard body coverage is required while participating in all Upward Bound events and activities. Please do not wear clothing that exposes the stomach, navel or underwear. Skirts and shorts should not be too tight or short as to obstruct comfortable movement and adequate coverage. Pants or shorts with written messages on the rear are not acceptable. Strapless tops and tube tops are not acceptable clothing. Head coverings such as hats, caps, and scarves may not be worn during class or any other Upward Bound activity (except for religious purposes). Upward Bound staff will make the final determination on the appropriateness of clothing. Students may be asked to leave if their clothing is determined to be inappropriate.

4Cell phones, iPods and other electronic devices

Students are allowed to have cell phones and other electronic devices with them. This is a privilege.  The device should be kept off or on silent mode while in class or participating in other Upward Bound activities. The use of these devices during class, assemblies, or any other inappropriate time, will cause the device to be taken away from the student.

Required Reports

Students are required to submit copies of high school report cards at the end of each grading period. Upward Bound also requires that students submit copies of score reports for standardized tests the student has taken. These include the FCAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc. Please turn in copies of report cards and test scores to your counselor or the Associate Director.
